History of Merrimack County, New Hampshire
Merrimack County, New Hampshire has a long and rich history that dates back to the early 1600s when it was inhabited by the Pennacook tribe. The Pennacook were part of the Algonquian-speaking peoples who inhabited much of New England. In 1629, John Mason and other British settlers arrived in the area and established settlements along the Merrimack River.
In 1741, Merrimack County was officially established and named after the river that runs through it. By this time, the population had grown to over 2,000 people with most living in small farming communities along the river.
